The 86 GRMN, which started internet-only pre-orders in January 2016, is a completely tuned car built by Toyota based on their popular '86' sports car. The 'GR' in GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing, the team who races Toyotas in various motorsports activities. The 'MN' stands for 'Meister of the Nürburgring'. Gazoo Racing has competed in the Nürburgring 24 hour race since 2012 in the 86, and has won their class twice since. The 86 GRMN is the ultimate 86 containing all the know-how gained from their racing efforts.
The chassis is made stiffer with the addition of reinforcements. In order to lower its centre of gravity, the bonnet and boot lid, as well as the roof, have been changed to carbon, and the rear and rear quarter windows are made of polycarbonate plastic. Aerodynamic parts such as the front spoiler and rear wing are specifically developed parts designed for effectiveness. The car has been made into a full 2 seater, with special Recaro bucket seats and a small diameter steering wheel.
For the engine, intake and exhaust parts have been replaced, and the friction of internal parts has been reduced to improve response and power in the high RPM range. As a result, both power and torque have been improved from the standard model by 18 BHP / 1.2 kgfm, to reach 215 BHP / 7,300 rpm and 22.1 kgfm / 5,200 rpm torque. To fully utilise the new specs a close ratio 6-speed manual transmission is added to the mix.
Of course, the chassis has been tuned as well. Specially developed dampers and springs are utilised for the suspension, and even the tyres are special models developed in conjunction with Bridgestone, with different sizes for the front and rear wheels. The brakes utilise opposed 6 pot monoblock callipers in the front and 4 pot in the rear.
The 86 GRMN is a 100 car limited production model and despite its price tag, which was over double the price of the standard model, it received orders reaching 30 times the number of available cars.
