The 356A 1600GS Carrera GT was the high performance version of the 356A. With the Carrera nameplate, Porsche produced their first real production sports car. Named after Porsche's victory at the Carrera Panamericana in '52, '53 and '54, this model mated the potent four-camshaft engine from the 550 RS Spyder into the 356's unassuming chassis. By 1958, it used a larger displacement version better suited for the 1600cc class, which was much more free-revving and powerful.
The GT version was also lightened and prepared for racing. This meant it featured little sound deadening or upholstery, aluminum bucket seats, increased compression and more power. The race specification Type 692/3 engine produced 141 bhp. In 1958-59 the 1600cc Carreras GT enjoyed success around the world in hillclimb and endurance events such as the 1000km of Nurburgring. They also dominated the SCCA Class F in the U.S.
Porsche described the Carrera model philosophy in their 1956 American brochure: ''We predict that the new Carrera engine by Porsche will take the motoring world by storm. (...) it becomes the first production sports car in the 1500 class to reach 125MPH limit, and at the same time remain a comfortable and easy handling touring car. (...) the Carrera is in keeping with the Porsche spirit and is the latest in a series which has dominated the scene since its first day on the track.''
